Memphis Football: A City’s Passion for the Game

Football has a strong place in Memphis, Tennessee. The city’s sporting culture brings together college football, school teams and devoted supporters, with the Memphis Tigers providing its best-known team on the national stage.

The Memphis Tigers

The University of Memphis football programme dates back to 1912. Known as the Tigers, the team has built a following through generations of college football and plays its home games at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, close to the university campus.

Memphis has enjoyed several memorable seasons. In 2019, the Tigers completed an unbeaten regular season, won the American Athletic Conference championship and earned a place in the Cotton Bowl Classic. The campaign helped raise the programme’s profile and gave supporters a season to remember.

Liberty Stadium and the match-day atmosphere

Football in Memphis is closely associated with Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The venue hosts Tigers home games and major sporting events, and its open-air setting gives supporters a lively place to gather on match days. Crowds, team colours and the traditions of college football all contribute to the atmosphere.

The stadium is also home to the annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl, a post-season college game that has brought teams and fans to the city for decades. The event connects Memphis with a wider tradition of American college football.

Football beyond the university

The city’s football culture extends beyond the Tigers. High-school programmes and local teams give young players the chance to learn the game, compete and represent their communities. For many supporters, following football begins at school level and continues through college.

Memphis has also been associated with professional American football teams at different points in its sporting history. These chapters reflect the city’s enthusiasm for the game, even as teams and leagues have changed over time.

A lasting part of Memphis culture

Memphis football is about more than results. It is part of the city’s social life, bringing families, students and long-time fans together. From school fields to packed college games, football continues to create shared traditions and moments of local pride.

For visitors, a Tigers game offers a chance to experience the city’s sporting spirit. For local supporters, it is a familiar part of the calendar—and a tradition that continues to evolve with every season.
